Goodies up for grabs in Brisbane Airport’s annual Lost Property Auction

Share

A Bvlgari 18K gold diamond necklace valued at A$11,000 is the most valuable of over 800 items up for sale in Brisbane Airport’s annual Lost Property Auction for charity.

To mark 100 years of Brisbane Airport, the auction also features a collection of heritage aviation items, such an aircraft blackbox, giving enthusiasts a rare chance to own a piece of history.

The auction features hundreds of items left behind by the 24 million passengers who travelled through the terminals in the past year.

Despite efforts to reunite owners with their belongings, many items remain unclaimed well beyond the standard holding period.

Brisbane Airport holds an auction once a year, with proceeds benefiting young Queenslanders through the Courier-Mail Children’s Fund. Last year’s auction raised A$90,000.

Recent recipients include Little Wings, Baby Give Back, Fair Fight Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.

Around 800 lots are going under the hammer allowing people to grab a bargain in the lead-up to Christmas, the biggest number in the history of the auction.

“There’s nothing better than grabbing a bargain, especially when you know the money is going to help young Queenslanders thanks to fantastic charities,” said airport spokesperson, Peter Doherty.

“It’s always surprising and even a little bizarre to see what gets left behind by the 70,000 passengers who pass through Brisbane Airport each day.

“With Brisbane Airport turning 100 this year, we’ve also included some special heritage aviation items we think will attract a lot of interest. Where else can you pick up a row of airline seats, a black box, cockpit voice recorder or vintage life jackets with Ansett on them?”

“Our aim in this 100th year of Brisbane Airport is to raise A$100,000 to help some of Queensland’s amazing charities that support young people.”

Unclaimed items going under the hammer include:

• Laptops, iPads and tablets and so many phones
• Cameras, tripods, GoPros, DJI Osmo Pocket, RODE wireless microphones & drones
• Surfboards, longboards, bodyboards, skateboards, RipStick
• Beach cabanas, umbrellas and hammock
• Musical instruments including guitars and ukelele and keyboard
• Scooters, bikes, toys and Star Wars Leggo, skateboard
• Collection of gold, silver and bronze bars
• Sewing machines, blenders and kitchen accessories.

To mark 100 years of Brisbane Airport, special aviation items featuring in the auction this year include:

• Runway signs used on the airfield
|• Brisbane Airport centenary neon sign
• Departure signage from the International Terminal
• Runway light
• Airline lifejackets with Ansett livery

While The Brisbane Lions and Brisbane Roar have also donated exclusive sporting items and experiences to help boost the fundraising tally.

The sales process is run by Lloyds Auctioneers and Valuers and will close on November 2.

“This is a highly anticipated auction every year, bidders never know what they might find, it is literally like digging through a treasure trove and bidders are guaranteed to find a bargain here with all items listing from $1,” according to Anthony McLeod, Auctioneer for Lloyd’s Auctions.
