New entry to Domestic Terminal opens at Brisbane Airport

A new entryway into Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal has opened giving passengers who only have carry-on luggage same-level access from the Skywalk into the brand-new central security screening area.

Once fully open by Christmas, the new central screening level will feature 10 brand-new security lanes equipped with Rapiscan CT (Computed Tomography) screening technology, also known as Standard 3.

The new technology delivers a more secure screening process, allowing passengers to keep laptops, secured drink bottles and aerosols inside bags for a smoother passenger experience.

The lanes also feature larger tubs to accommodate more personal items and an automatic tray return.

Spanning 1,250sqm the new central screening point is equivalent to the footprint of a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 aircraft, or three average suburban house blocks side-by-side.

The staged opening will commence from today, scaling up to full operation by Christmas. In the meantime, the new northern (Qantas) screening area as well as the temporary Virgin screening area will continue to operate to screen holiday crowds.

Brisbane Airport CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff, noted that the opening of the new entrance marked another milestone in the Domestic Terminal upgrade, part of the A$5 billion Future BNE transformation.

“We want to thank the community for their patience over the past two years while we worked to deliver these significant works to refresh the terminal and upgrade security screening equipment to meet Australian Government standards by the end of this year,” he said.

“Passengers will be able to leave most items in their hand luggage including laptops, secured drink bottles and aerosols, which will be welcome news for frequent flyers.

“We’re not done yet, but we’re making great progress. As I often say, airports are always ready yet never finished.”

The Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal is the most connected domestic network in Australia with services to 61 destinations.
