Traffic figures on the rise across Aena’s global airport network

Global airport operator, Aena, welcomed 34.7 million passengers across its network in September, 7% more than in the corresponding month a year ago.

Aena – which operates 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton in the UK and 17 airports in Brazil – handled 292,139 aircraft movements (+5.8%) and 120,781 tonnes of cargo (+14.3%) during the month.

The monthly total means that some 282,720,476 passengers have passed through Aena’s airports in the first nine months of 2024 – 8.9% more than in the same period last year.

Aena airports in Spain

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in September with 5,851,274, growth of 8.6% compared with the same month last year.

It is followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 5,061,870 (+10.3%); Palma de Mallorca, with 4,074,740 (+5.5%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 2,502,377 (+10.4%); and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1,801,340 (+15.3%).

In total, 17 airports enjoyed a record September, which in addition to Madrid, included Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Gran Canaria, Valencia, Tenerife Sur, César Manrique-Lanzarote and Sevilla.

Aena’s Brazilian airports

Between them, Aena’s 17 Brazilian gateways handled in excess of 3.6 million (+4.4%) passengers, 40,046 aircraft movements (+2.4%) and 9,553 tonnes of freight (+15%) in September.

Highlights include Recife Airport welcoming 778,602 passengers and 4,055 tonnes of cargo, an upturns of 6.6% and 6% respectively on September 2023, and São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport experiencing a 28.6% rise in cargo volumes.

London Luton Airport
During the month of September, 1,567,627 passengers passed through London Luton Airport’s London facilities, 1.9% more than in the same month in 2023.

The UK gateway also accommodated 12,068 aircraft movements (+2.6%) and 2,507 tonnes of freight (+17.2%) during the month, ensuring that in the year-to-date it has handled 13 million passengers, 100,966 aircraft movements and 22,567 tonnes of freight – healthy increases of 2.6%, 3.1% and 21.7% respectively.
