Rising traffic figures ensure healthy start to new year in Hong Kong

A total of 4.1 million passengers passed through Hong Kong International Airport last month – twice as many as it handled in January a year ago.
The airport also experienced healthy increases in flights and cargo volumes during the month, the 28,755 air traffic movements and 377,000 tonnes of freight handled across its facilities representing upturns of 77.3% and 31% respectively.
Operator, Airport Authority Hong Kong, notes that “the growth in passenger traffic continued a steady trend of recovery, with significant increases in all passenger segments compared to January 2023.”
Traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Mainland China and Taiwan saw the highest growth in terms of passenger traffic.
While the month saw a substantial year-on-year increase in cargo exports of 44.5% with traffic to and from key trading regions in North America, Europe and the Middle East posting the highest increases in January.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume recorded 41 million, 443.1% higher than the previous comparable period. Flight movements and cargo throughput saw year-on-year surges of 101.9% and 7.9% to 288,620 and 4.4 million tonnes, respectively.
New airline additions at HKG include Ruili Airlines, providing services between Hong Kong and Nanning in Mainland China, and Cambodia Angkor Air, which has launched services to Phnom Penh.
