New routes boost traffic at Stockholm Arlanda and across Sweden

Share

Traffic continues to grow at Sweden’s airports with a total of 2.6 million passengers (+1.5%) passing through Swedavia’s ten gateways last month.

According to the airport operator, the upwards trend is being driven by increased demand for international travel, primarily from Stockholm Arlanda Airport, where the airlines continue to expand their route networks.

Indeed, this year’s summer schedules has seen the launch of 25 new routes across Swedavia’s airports, including 10 brand new destinations.

And the trend is not just in Stockholm or Gothenburg, with summer season charter services also boosting connectivity at Malmö, Luleå, Umeå and Östersund airports.

“Demand for international travel at our airports continues to increase, while the range of destinations has been strengthened through the summer traffic programme,” enthuses Swedavia’s president and CEO, Jonas Abrahamsson.

“At the same time, the weaker trend in domestic travel continues, although there are regional differences. Overall, we expect to see a continued increase in travel during the summer season.”

In April, international travel across Sweden’s airports increased by 4% to nearly 2 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased 5% to just under 660,000 passengers.

As a result, total passenger traffic at Swedavia’s airports in April was 82% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport served more than 1.8 million passengers in April, which is a 5% upturn on April 2023. International travel increased 8% to 1.6 million passengers, and domestic travel also increased 8% to just under 275,000 passengers.

Overall, passenger numbers at Stockholm Arlanda in April reached 91% of pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Elsewhere, passenger numbers at Göteborg Landvetter Airport remained the same as April 2023, while Ronneby Airport, followed by Kiruna Airport, were the best performing regional airports last month.
