Enhancing the passenger experience at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has completed its new International Central Processor (ICP) and renovated Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility.
The Texas gateway is confident that the HOK designed facilities will create a more seamless international travel experience while expanding capacity and improving efficiency.
The project is a centrepiece of Houston Airports’ international terminal redevelopment program (ITRP).
The ICP consolidates check-in and security screening for international passengers traveling through Terminal D and Terminal E. New and improved passenger arrivals and drop-off kerbs further improve traffic flow and wayfinding.

Designed around clarity, light and connectivity, HOK notes that the facility streamlines the passenger journey.
An 11-lane departures kerb beneath an expansive canopy and a two-story atrium certainly establishes a memorable front door for Houston.
Inside, travellers move through self-service kiosks, 17 automated security screening lanes with biometric screening technology and a centralised immigration and customs hall served by upgraded baggage handling systems.
“We designed the International Central Processor to make every step of the journey more intuitive and efficient, whether you’re a traveller navigating the airport or an employee supporting daily operations,” said Alex Bernard, senior project architect at HOK.
“It’s a welcoming gateway that reflects Houston’s character while helping the airport serve millions of passengers more effectively.”

Floor-to-ceiling glass, skylights and clear sightlines are designed to ease navigation and reduce the stress of international travel.
Inspired by the region’s landscape, the architecture is complemented by a curated public art programme featuring works by Dale Chihuly, Marta Chilindron, Miguel Arzabe, Rafael Vargas and Graciela Hasper. The Oculus, a Houston-inspired digital installation, serves as a focal point while connecting the departures and arrivals levels.
HOK is quick to note that sustainability strategies are integrated throughout the project.
The facility achieves LEED Silver equivalency and exceeds Houston Airport System energy-performance requirements by 20% over current code. Additional measures cut embodied carbon emissions by more than 1,264 tons, and high-efficiency fixtures and irrigation systems conserve more than 860,000 gallons of water annually.
The completed ICP and FIS redevelopment position George Bush Intercontinental Airport – one of the US’s busiest international gateways – for future growth while providing travellers with a more efficient, welcoming and distinctly Houston experience.
