Passenger numbers rise across Fraport’s global airport network

Frankfurt Airport enjoyed its busiest month of the year in August, although the 6.3 million passengers handled during the month was slightly down on the corresponding period a year ago.

The two busiest days so far in 2026 were also in August, with each day seeing more than 220,000 passengers.

During the reporting month, cargo volumes increased by 2.9% to 179,400 tonnes and the number of aircraft movements reduced by 4.6%, to 40,968 takeoffs and landings.

Outside of Germany, most airports operated by Fraport experienced growth.

At Ljubljana Airport (LJU), traffic increased strongly, by close to 20% with a total of 222,231 passengers passing through the Slovenian capital city gateway airport in August 2026.

Fraport’s two Brazilian airports, Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), recorded a combined increase of 4.9% to 1.3 million passengers in August and Peru’s Lima Airport (LIM) saw growth of 4.9% to around 2.4 million passengers.

The traditionally busy summer month for Europe ensured that Fraport’s 14 Greek airports enjoyed a good August, with passenger numbers up 5%.

It was a similar story in Bulgaria, where Fraport’s two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) welcomed 875,035 passengers overall (+2.1%), although traffic at Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera surprisingly fell slightly, by around 1% to 5.9 million passengers.

This all added up to the total number of passengers handled at its global network of airports rising by 2.1% to around 24.1 million in August 2026.
