Traffic recovery continues at Frankfurt Airport

Some 3.9 million passengers passed through Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in February 2024, almost 13% up on the corresponding month a year ago, despite strikes on several days.

The strikes resulted in the cancellation of about 1,770 flights, preventing roughly 225,000 passengers from traveling via Frankfurt as planned. This shortfall was only partially offset by the special effect of additional traffic on this year’s leap day (February 29).

The upturn in numbers was most welcome, but the airport notes that passenger volumes for the month were still about 15% below pre-pandemic levels for February.

Cargo volumes in Frankfurt (comprising airfreight and airmail) grew to 153,473 metric tons in February 2024, surpassing the level of February 2023 by 4.7%.

Aircraft movements also increased to 30,177 takeoffs and landings. This constituted a year-on-year rise of 11%. The accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) grew to roughly 1.9 million metric tonnes or 10.6% more than in February 2023.

Most of the airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also recorded increases in February, with Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia, and Lima (LIM) in Peru experiencing rises of 32.8% and 22.5% respectively.

Fraport’s 14 regional Greek airports handled a total of 636,866 passengers (+13.9%) and Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera, saw nearly an 18% rise in travellers.
