Passenger numbers rising across Aena’s Spanish airport network

Spanish airport operator, Aena, reports that its recovery from the global pandemic gathered pace in March, with passenger numbers across its network now back to 78% of 2019 levels.
Aena welcomed 15.5 million passengers (+387%), 152,770 air traffic movements (+86%) and 92,300 tonnes of cargo (+8.8%) in March 2022 compared to the same month a year ago.
Of the total number of travellers recorded last month, 15,521,185 were commercial passengers, of which 9,843,389 travelled on international flights (24.6% less than in March 2019 and 674.9% more than in 2021) and 5,677,796 on domestic flights (17% less than before the pandemic, but 197.6% more than last year).
Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the third month of the year with 3,557,755, representing a decrease of 27.5% compared to March 2019 and an increase of 266.2% as against March of last year.
This is followed by Barcelona with 2,701,372 (31.9% less compared 2019 and 537.5% more over 2021), Málaga, with 1,178,907 (-12.9% and +606.5%), Palma de Mallorca, with 1,098,167 (-15.6% and +303.4%) and Gran Canaria with 1,057,098, (-18.9% and +283.5%).
