Passenger numbers on the rise at Frankfurt Airport

Share

A total of 5.7 million passengers passed through Frankfurt Airport in May, 2.7% more than in the corresponding month a year ago.

Operator, Fraport, notes that the rise was helped by the timing of holidays and school vacation periods, with Southern Europe proving particularly popular with passengers.

Destinations in the Far East, Africa and Latin America were among the fastest growing long-haul destinations, according to the airport.

There were some downward trends during the month though, cargo volumes declining by 1.3% and aircraft movements dipping by 2.1% on May 2025.

Outside of Germany, most Fraport airports posted increases. At Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport (LJU), traffic increased strongly, by 11.2% to 168,820 passengers in May 2026.

Between them Fraport’s two Brazilian airports, Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), recorded an increase of 5.7% to 1.2 million passengers, while Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru and Fraport’s 14 Greek airports saw increases of 1.3% and 6% respectively.

In Bulgaria, the two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) welcomed 252,375 passengers (+13.3%). Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera didn’t fare quite so well, however, as its monthly traffic levels dropped by 5% to 3.7 million passengers.

All added up to a 1.9% increase in passengers across Fraport’s global airport work, which welcomed 17.1 travellers in May 2026.
