Expansion milestone at Mexico’s Monterrey International Airport

Mexican airport operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA), has inaugurated the first phase of a €400 million investment programme at Monterrey International airport.

The delivery of the new East Concourse of Terminal A is a major milestone of a five-year expansion programme that will bring a significant step in the ongoing expansion of Mexico.

The overall objective is to increase the airport’s capacity by 50% to equip it handle up to 18 million passengers annually.

Global airport operator, VINCI Airports, is the main shareholder in OMA, which operates 13 airports in Mexico.

According to VINCI Airport’s, the Monterrey upgrade outlines OMA’s steadfast commitment to enhancing and modernising airport infrastructure in the region of Nuevo León, positioning it as an increasingly vital hub for national and international connectivity.

The investment programme means that the airport now has 70 check-in desks, self-service and bag-drop facilities; a 10,000sqm of commercial plaza at the heart of the building; an integrated and automatised baggage handling system; two piers for additional seating areas and boarding gates; new and expanded baggage reclaim areas; and enhanced security check for departing passengers.

Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and president of VINCI Airports said: “I would like to congratulate the OMA and VINCI Airports teams who have successfully completed the first stage of this major project for Monterrey airport.

“VINCI Airports’ commitment to OMA is to support the economic growth of Northern Mexico, in particular by increasing terminal capacity for passengers and improving their travel experience.”

OMA believes that the upgrade cements Monterrey International Airport’s status as the primary air hub in the northern region of the country, served by 13 airlines operating direct services to 38 domestic and 22 international destinations.

VINCI Airports acquired a 29.33% stake in OMA in 2022 and notes that it fully supports an €800 million plus expansion and the renovation programme across the Mexican airport operator’s 13 airports.
