The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced that its airports saw more passengers during August 2023 than during any previous month in history.

A record high number of air travellers also passed through the airports during the Labor Day holiday travel period.

In facts and figures, a record-breaking 13.3 million passengers passed through Newark Liberty International, John F Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and New York Stewart International airports in August 2023.

That record high level surpassed August 2019 as the busiest month ever at the region’s airports. So far, this year remains on track to be the busiest year on record for the airports.

The total means that up to August 31, 2023, the Big Apple’s airports handled over 96 million passengers, an increase of about 1.5 million or 2% from the same period in 2019.

August’s robust performance is due in part to increased domestic capacity at Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia airports.

August 2023’s passenger volume of 13.3 million is an increase of about 26,000 passengers from August 2019. That metric represented an increase of about 179,000 travellers, or almost 1.4% from July 2023.

The 2023 Labor Day holiday travel period also shattered previous records. Approximately 2.4 million travellers used the Port Authority’s three major airports from August 31 to September. 5. This was a 6% jump from the previous record of 2.26 million passengers set over the 2019 Labor Day holiday travel period.

According to PANYNJ, the increase is largely attributable to substantial domestic travel demand, which jumped 10% from 2019 levels.
