A new era has begun for Maastricht Aachen Airport with the Royal Schiphol Group taking a 40% stake in it and the start of a new period of strategic cooperation between the gateways.

The agreement, signed today between the Royal Schiphol Group and the province of Limburg, will see the province maintain keep a 60% stake in MAA.

The parties are committed to further developing MAA into a sustainable, environment-conscious and future-proof airport for both passengers and cargo.

According to Schiphol, it and MAA are joining forces to make MAA more sustainable, with innovation and electric flight as main priorities. The collaboration will also focus on cargo handling and innovations in that area.

Maastricht Aachen is the second and only regional cargo airport in the Netherlands and therefore makes a significant economic contribution.

Both airports recognise the importance of cargo and of good connectivity with the world. With the cargo capacity at MAA and the expertise available at both airports, the cooperation offers opportunities for further development and efficiency, with added value for cargo partners at both airports.

Furthermore, the airports will share knowledge of other areas, including strategy, real estate, commerce and maintenance.

Robert Carsouw, CFO Royal Schiphol Group, says: “We are pleased to officially welcome Maastricht Aachen Airport to Royal Schiphol Group. Together, we connect the Netherlands with the rest of the world and create value for society and the economy.

“At the same time, it must be in balance with the living environment. That is why, also in Maastricht, we are committed to sustainable aviation with less impact on the environment and our surroundings.

While Stephan Satijn, economy delegate province of Limburg, notes: “Even though Schiphol and MAA are not comparable in terms of size and number of flights, I do believe that this collaboration is a powerful combination.

“MAA can benefit from Schiphol’s knowledge, experience and networks, while Schiphol can use the experience that MAA will gain with innovations such as electric flying.”
