No more plastic straws in New York LaGuardia’s Terminal B

LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP) has announced the elimination of single-use plastic straws in the F&B outlets at New York LaGuardia’s Terminal B.

LGP is the manager and developer of Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport, and this move comes as part of its commitment to creating a terminal that combines the best of what New York has to offer with sustainable design and operation.

“Eliminating single-use plastic straws will positively contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of Terminal B operations, and we’re proud to be single-use plastic straw free,” enthuses LaGuardia Gateway Partners CEO, Stewart Steeves.

“Our mission at LaGuardia Gateway Partners is to combine excellent service with best-in-class design. We are creating a Terminal B that not only provides a guest experience that everyone can be proud of, but also incorporates sustainability into all operations.”

In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the 280 million plastic straws used daily in the United States; including their contribution to climate change, ocean pollution, and the accumulation of micro-plastics in the food chain, LGP is eliminating all petroleum-based single-use plastic straws from food and beverage operators.

All Terminal B commercial partners have procured naturally degradable or reusable straw alternatives.

Since the opening of the Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall last year, concessions have phased out the availability of single-use plastic straws at their locations. Instead, commercial partners now have naturally degradable or reusable straw alternative options available.

There are currently no regulatory mandates in New York to ban single-use plastic straws. However, there is proposed legislation in the New York City Council to ban single-use plastic items and study single-use plastic alternatives.

Given the environmental benefits associated with reducing the use of conventional plastic straws, LGP is proactively implementing this policy.

Those who require plastic straws for disabilities will be able to request one as part of LGP’s adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
