Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has unveiled its latest art installation, ‘Everyday Transcendence’, a hand-painted mural by renowned local artist Allison Kunath.
Situated on the Departures Level in Terminal 4’s concourse, this site-specific mural is a vibrant addition to the airport’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the passenger experience through art.
“LAX’s murals have been curated to welcome passengers from around the world to Los Angeles and create a memorable ‘you are here’ moment,” said Sarah Cifarelli, director of LAX’s Art Program.
“Everyday Transcendence offers a distinct new voice to this initiative. Its monumental size acts as a gateway into new horizons, engaging travellers to reflect on their journeys and step towards something new.”
Measuring 226 feet wide by 16 feet tall, Kunath’s mural spans three connecting walls above a new concessions area, creating a welcoming space for passengers.
The mural’s bold design features three sunburst patterns, one on each wall, with the artist’s distinctive, staccato brushwork radiating across the surface.
Awash with over 60 assorted colours, Kunath’s palette produces a night-to-day effect with a range of cool blues on the east wall to warm hues on the west wall. The centre south wall connects the east and west walls with a full chroma spectrum, resulting in a dynamic journey of coloor.
According to the airport, Kunath’s expressive mark-making generates a sense of movement and connectivity, mimicking the comings and goings of the passengers within the space.
It adds: “Acknowledging the busy and complex nature of the airport, Kunath’s mural uses familiar patterns and symbols to explore human connections, relationships, and emotions.
“The sunburst patterns offer a metaphorical portal inviting passengers to pause and linger in the moment, allowing oneself to feel connected to a deeper sense of being and reminding us that transcendence is within our reach, even in the most unexpected places.”
The installation of this large-scale mural was a collaborative effort executed by a dedicated team of painters, led by Kunath and overseen by LAX arts manager, Tim McGowan. Over the course of two weeks, the team transformed the concourse walls into an inspiring and immersive experience of colour.
“It was an honour to collaborate with the LAX Art Program to bring this artwork to life,” said Allison Kunath.
“Inspired by the small but arresting moments that give life its texture and beauty, my hope is that viewers are momentarily transported to a place of gratitude and reflection as they pass through the space.”
As part of the Terminal 4 renovations, the mural enhances the airport’s mission to create a welcoming and culturally rich environment. It now on view for ticketed passengers.
