Nuremberg Airport to expand cargo facilities

Construction is underway on a third cargo centre at Nuremberg Airport, which if all goes to plan, could open as early as the end of next year.

The new facility, called Cargo Centre 3 (CCN3), is being added to ensure that the German gateway keeps up with demand.

“With Cargo Centre 3, the airport is now investing in modern infrastructure and sending a strong signal for the region’s economic future,” enthused Albert Füracker, Bavaria’s Minister of State for Finance and Home Affairs and chairman of the supervisory board of Nuremberg Airport.

“The project strengthens supply chains, boosts the competitiveness of Northern Bavaria and consolidates Nuremberg Airport’s position as an important and efficient logistics hub.”

According to the airport, CCN3 is its response to the sustained high demand for modern logistics and handling facilities and will add an extra 6,200 square metres of cargo handling space

Of this, approximately 4,600 square metres are allocated to storage and handling areas, whilst around 1,600 square metres are dedicated to modern office space on the upper floor.

“Cargo Centre 3 will further strengthen the airport’s position as a logistics hub and expand it in line with demand,” says airport managing director Dr Michael Hupe.

“With this new building, we are creating additional capacity for our customers and making targeted investments in the future viability of our site. The expansion enables us to respond flexibly to the demands of a dynamic market and to secure the airport’s competitiveness in the long term.”

Over the past few decades, Nuremberg Airport has developed into a major air freight hub, handling more than 90,000 tonnes of air freight annually at the two existing cargo centres
