Frankfurt Airport enjoys strong traffic recovery in April

Share

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed four million passengers in April 2022 – 303% more than it did during the same month a year ago.

As a result, Germany’s largest aviation hub recorded its strongest traffic month since the beginning of the pandemic – with April 2022 passenger numbers even exceeding the monthly levels achieved during last year’s summer season.

However, passenger numbers were still 34.2% down on pre-COVID April 2019.

In contrast, cargo tonnage (airfreight + airmail) slipped by 16% year-on-year in April 2022, the airport attributing the drop to the impact of airspace restrictions related to the war in Ukraine, as well as the extensive anti-COVID measures taken in China.

FRA’s aircraft movements climbed by 108.8% year-on-year to 32,342 takeoffs and landings in the reporting month.

Across the Fraport Group, the airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also benefitted in April 2022 from the ongoing rebound in passenger demand.

Indeed, all of Fraport’s airports worldwide achieved traffic gains of more than 100% compared to April 2021.

Its global airport portfolio includes Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia; Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) in Brazil; Lima (LIM) in Peru; 14 regional airports in Greece; Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) in Bulgaria; and Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey.
