Strong September traffic growth in Hong Kong

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) saw steady growth across all key traffic areas in September.

Passenger traffic recorded a double-digit growth of 10.2% year on year to 4.86 million passengers, while flight movements grew by 7.0% to 32,175, and cargo volume rose by 6.3% to 433,000 tonnes.

Overall passenger growth continued to be driven primarily by transfer/transit passengers, recording a double-digit increase.

This was followed by visitors, which recorded 5% year-on-year growth. Regionally, most markets recorded growth, with the strongest contribution from the Chinese Mainland, while decline in the Middle East continued to ease.

On the cargo front, the growth in September was led by transhipments and imports, which increased by 26.9% and 9.2% respectively.

Southeast Asia and the Chinese Mainland were the main growth drivers, offsetting the decline in volume in Europe following the removal of the EU’s duty-free de minimis exemption in July.

Over the first three quarters of the year, HKH handled 49.1 million passengers, while aircraft movements reached 302,075, representing year-on-year increases of 10.1% and 3.9%, respectively.

Traditionally high cargo volumes – HKG is the busiest cargo airport in the world – rose 3.1% year-on-year to 3.78 million tonnes.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger throughput increased 11.5% year on year to 65.4 million, while aircraft movements rose 4.9% to 405,945.

Cargo throughput grew 3.3% year on year to 5.18 million tonnes.
