Over 900 runners take part in runway run at Memphis International Airport

A big congratulations is in order to all 900 runners that recently took part in the first ever five kilometre long runway race for charity at Memphis International Airport.

They included a four year old and a 92 year old, and their efforts in completing Runway 5K on Sunday have boosted the funds of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority’s Community Foundation.

The foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation that focuses on civic engagement, education, sustainability efforts, health, and community-supporting initiatives, including providing support to local schools and raising more than $300,000 in academic scholarships over the years.

One of the highlights of the course was that participants were able to run under a FedEx aircraft that was parked on the runway. A Tennessee Air National Guard (TANG) aircraft was also parked nearby.

Top finishers were presented with a special award that featured a runway light, and certificates were given to the top three finishers in various age categories. The post-race festivities included the awards ceremony as well as a raffle for two round-trip tickets donated by Breeze Airways.

“Our first annual Runway 5K was a huge success and we thank the hundreds of participants that came out to support a great cause today,” said Terry Blue, president and CEO of the Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority.

“It’s our goal to make this an annual event that celebrates aviation, fitness, and our community.”

Indeed, the overwhelming community response to the event has already let to the second Runway 5K being scheduled for 2026.
