Good start to New Year for passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport

Share

Around 3.7 million passengers passed through Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in January – 65.5% more than in the corresponding month a year ago.

Airport operator, Fraport, says that it benefited from return travel from vacation destinations after the Christmas holidays, with warm weather destinations such as the Canary Islands, intercontinental destinations in the Caribbean, North America and Central Africa accounting for the bulk of last month’s traffic.

However, in spite of the upturn, passenger numbers for January were still 21.3% down on January 2019.

The German gateways notes that January was not such a good month for cargo, with volumes falling 18.8% compared to January 2022, a decline it attributes to the overall economic slowdown and the suspension of flights to Russia.

January 2023 was also particularly affected by the Chinese New Year celebrations, which began earlier than last year and has always resulted in declining cargo volumes.

FRA’s aircraft movements increased by 20.6% to 29,710 takeoffs and landings. Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) grew by 15.4%t to about 1.9 million metric tons (in both cases compared with January 2022).
