First big monthly traffic rise since March 2020 for Brussels South Charleroi

Share

July proved kind to Brussels South Charleroi Airport which is delighted to report that it enjoyed its first significant month-on-month rise in passengers since March 2020.

The Belgian airport reveals that “a strong rise in traveller numbers” during the first month of the summer led to 558,328 passengers passing through its facilities in July – double the number it handled during the corresponding period a year ago.

And although the total is still  31% down on July 2019, the airport admits that the upturn is “encouraging” and better than it expected.

According to Brussels South Charleroi Airport, the Mediterranean region is proving popular with the top five destination countries in July being Italy, Spain, France, Morocco and Greece.

The airport is currently handling around 140 flights a day or around 4,529 a month, which is around 18% down on pre-COVID levels.

Airport CEO, Philippe Verdonck, enthuses: “We have experienced some turbulence and there are still many challenges ahead, but July has shown us that there is still demand for travel.

“No fewer than eight new routes have been launched this summer and eight additional cities will be available from our airport this winter.

“We must continue our efforts to get back on to an even keel and bring about the return to normality that everyone is hoping for.”
