Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport in the Dominican Republic has opened its new cargo terminal.
The new €14 million complex is a key component of VINCI Airports modernisation plan for the airport, which it has been responsible for operating and developing since 2016, along with five other gateways in the Dominican Republic.
It notes that the new terminal will facilitate the development of Dominican exports and will be occupied by FedEx, which is expanding its footprint and operation in the country.
According to VINCI Airports, the freight terminal boasts 6,800sqm of warehousing, offices and support facilities such as customs clearance and banking services.
Design features that optimise energy and water consumption also arguably make it one of the most environmentally friendly in the country.
In addition the airport notes that 100% of the waste produced by the building will be reused or recycled and that photovoltaic panels installed in 2019, which cover about 20% of the airport’s energy requirements.
Next up in terms of the airport’s development are plans to upgrade the passenger terminal, with proposals to extend the atrium and modernise the existing immigration and security areas set to be completed by the end of 2021.
